How To Clean Artificial Office Plants

Swathes of greenery with splashes of stunning in-season flora are welcome sights in any office environment. Whether it’s a silk flower arrangement on a reception desk or a full greenery wall, we feel at ease around natural colours and shapes. Artificial office plants look exactly like the real deal, but they won’t ever wilt or require watering. What they will need is light cleaning from time to time, so here’s how to clean artificial office plants the right way:

How do office plants get dirty?

Dust and dirt love to make their homes on the surfaces of artificial plants. The synthetic materials attract dust particles in the air. After a while, your fresh and vibrant-looking office plants end up looking a bit off colour. Dirt can also leave artificial office plants lacking lustre, and certain soiling can even stain the plant. For this reason, we recommend exercising regular light cleaning and scheduling dedicated deep cleaning days to keep your artificial plants looking fabulous while staying on top of the dust and dirt build-up.

5 tips for cleaning your artificial office plants

  • Dust plants regularly

The best way to keep your artificial office plants dust and dirt build-up free is to dust them off regularly. Two to three times a week will do the trick, but dusting them every day would be first prize. If you dust plants off regularly, you won’t have to set aside as much time for deep cleaning.

  • Deep clean twice a year

If you’re dusting regularly, you only really need to deep clean office plants once every six months. Deep cleaning will involve using one of the below methods to wet clean your plants – removing any dust and dirt from spots where a feather duster can’t get into. Check with your artificial office plant supplier to see if which plants you can safely expose to moisture.

  • The shower method

How to clean office plants in the shower? Using the spraying water from a shower head is a great way to rinse dust and dirt from your artificial plants. Wrap a plastic packet around the parts of your plant that shouldn’t get wet, and hold it tightly closed while suspending the plant under a warm stream of shower water for a minute.

  • The vinegar method

Sometimes grime and dirt build-up is more than what a shower of water can handle. Bring out the big guns by adding white vinegar and water to a spray bottle. Vinegar is able to cut through dirt easier than water, so get a really deep clean by carefully spraying your plant with vinegar and then wiping it dry with a cloth.

  • The hairspray method

Need to clean your artificial office plants in a hurry before the office photo shoot? If you’re time-strapped when trying to clean your plants, consider the hairspray method. Use a tin of hairspray to spray your dirty plant down. The compressed air will blast away any obvious dust and dirt particles, while leaving your plant with that just-been-cleaned sheen.

  1. Leaves in a Vase

Make a bold statement by decorating your home with lush green leaves in a clear vase.  For many, a vase filled with fillers seems weird but somehow the leaf trend works.  Pinterest reports that interest in single leaf displays is up by 136 percent since last year.  I love these leaves as a simple centerpiece for dinner a party, a wedding, or just as a table topper. You can’t go wrong with leaves in a vase to give your home that modern fresh touch.

Hanging Plants

One of our favourite plant styling techniques is hanging plants.  Plant hangers are a great way to make your space visually appealing, break up a room’s dynamics, and keep your plants away from pets or children.  We selected some of my favourite hanging designs from our collection to share inspiration with you!

  1. Succulents

If you’ve been following what’s trending in home decor, you probably noticed that succulents are still one of the most requested plants for the home. These exotic and beautiful creatures have been used everywhere from the patio, on the table, kitchen counters, or in the windowsills, succulents are everywhere. These luscious plants are nothing new, but their prevalence in home décor seems to be a trend that we really love.

Artificial Plants – Turning brown thumbs green!!!

Did you know that a Cactus, which is a symbol of durability and endurance could actually die?  I didn’t until I killed one myself.  After my sad state of constant plant killing, I was on a mission to change my brown thumbs green with artificial plants.

So, you heard it first-hand – I am a murderer.  Not in an assassin kind of way, but more in a “I love plants but I just don’t have green fingers.   In fact, I think that plants are beautiful! Especially living in Durban, I appreciate anything green, it provides a very soothing contrast to life’s hustle and bustle. For years, I had bought plants but the only plant that survives under my thumb is an artificial one.

Artificial plants are useful for so many reasons: –

  • It’s great for those with a busy lifestyle
  • It’s even better if you have naughty children like mine
  • There’s no watering
  • There’s no need for sunlight
  • There are no more muddy spills on my expensive furniture, rugs, and floors
  • No weeds or irregular growth
  • It’s great for allergy sufferers
  • Perfect for homes with pets
  • They last a lifetime

Roberta Govender – Silk By Design Marketing (Don’t worry, I’m not one of the florists)

Why you should consider using silk flowers for your wedding!

Ever considered silk flowers for your wedding? On the morning of my big day,  I sat at the hairdresser getting my hair curled, when my mother had called me anxiously to let me know that all the flowers we’d purchased for the wedding had dried-up and died. My mother had carefully followed the florist instruction, yet they had withered and died in the bathroom of our home. The wedding was in 7 hours. My father and mother frantically searched to find enough flowers in Durban to make seven decent bouquets, seven boutonnieres, and twenty centerpieces.  Before my wedding, I would have never given Silk Flowers a second thought. It’s the Flower Incident as I call it, that changed my whole perception of silk flowers.

In addition to the fact that Silk By Design produces quality, designer floral arrangements,  there are many benefits to choosing silk flowers for your special day. From stress levels to budgets and decor, here are reasons why you should consider choosing silk flowers for your wedding.

Why choose artificial plants for your interior landscaping installation?

It’s no secret that with today’s urban majority spending more and more time indoors (over 90% in some cases) and away from nature, that there is a growing desire to have internal spaces mirror the natural world. This sense of nature can be achieved through clever interior design choices including using natural and neutral paint colours, raw wood and stone finishes, as well as including both natural and artificial interior landscaping installations. While live plants can be great in certain situations, often times artificial plants are simply the best way to go…

Artificial plants are almost maintenance free

While it’s said that there is no such thing as a free lunch, maintaining artificial plants is just about as close as it gets when it comes to interior landscaping. Not only is the cost of maintaining an artificial garden extremely low, it also requires very little effort with only occasional dusting and cleaning required.

Artificial plants look great all year round

Artificial plants have one great advantage over their live counterparts, that is simply their longevity. Interior live plants usually look great for the first few weeks (or days) after they have been planted, but it usually doesn’t take long for this initial honeymoon period to wear off, particularly if the plants are located in an area with poor light or ventilation or where it is difficult to properly service. And even if an interior garden is well maintained and survives for a few months, it’s usually only a matter of time or the changing of the seasons before certain plants begin to wither & die.

Artificial plants don’t attract pests or cause allergies

Because artificial plants are made of synthetic material, the chances of them attracting pests and vermin are much lower than with live plants. Furthermore, artificial plants are great for areas where allergies may be an issue, particularly public spaces.

So if you are looking to redesign or redecorate your home, office, or hotel lobby, and are thinking of doing some interior landscaping, why not consider artificial trees and plants and go green all year long.

At Silk by Design we carry a wide range of artificial trees, plants, and flowers and would be happy to quote you for a bespoke design. Contact us at info@silkbydesign.co.za or check out our catalogue at www.silkbydesign.co.za/catalogue for more.

What makes a quality silk flower?

Silk & artificial flowers and trees have over the years become a commonplace feature in modern decorating and design, either complementing or even replacing live plants completely.

When done well, it is often hard to tell the difference between live plants and artificial at first glance, and it is only upon closer inspection that one can see the true state of affairs. These plants most often go unnoticed.

Conversely, when done poorly, artificial trees and flowers can be obtrusive and tacky, obviously standing out as not being real and completely undermining their intended purpose.

Just like with any product, both good and bad quality flowers and plants can be found in the market and today consumers have a wide range to choose from. Many chain stores offer a range of artificial flowers which with, few exceptions, fit the bill of cheap and nasty and consumers need to look to niche or boutique suppliers for really high-quality silk plants.

The key elements that stand out when setting great quality silks apart from mediocre or poor ones are:

  • Colour – Flowers are known to bloom in an ever-increasing array of colours, however, these colours all have their base in nature. Even if not immediately obvious to the eye, if the colour of an artificial flower or arrangement does not fit within the natural palette, then it will not look real.

  • Shape – While it seems obvious that an artificial flower should have the shape of its live counterpart, the shape of a flower or plant has many elements, all of which need to be right to create the illusion of the real thing. This includes stems, leaves, petals and other smaller elements.

  • Feel – This is perhaps the hardest element to replicate but includes the way the flower or plant feels in your hand to the way it moves and reacts. Real Touch flowers have become popular of late. These flowers are made with a special waxy coating that mimics the feel of real flowers.

At Silk by Design we have a long history of selecting the most realistic and lifelike plants, trees, and flowers available, and this attention to detail sets us, and our arrangements, apart. We source our products from suppliers who have spent years perfecting every detail of the flowers they make and who are always striving to improve their designs.

So if you are looking for unmatched quality and flowers that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing… look no further than Silk by Design.

Interior Design Trend Forecast for 2018

There are a number of new and exciting trends in the Interior Design world this year and in this article, we will cover them. We will help you give your space a facelift and make sure that you are up-to-date with everything that’s new and beautiful in the Interior Design world!

Gelato colours – they are a huge rage! The subtle pastel shades are sure to make you smile and instantly feel at ease. Here are a few colorful ways to get reacquainted with pastels in your modern interiors. Pastel shades are a great way to transform a boring coloured kitchen into an inspiring one. Place a silk mixed peony arrangement in your kitchen, pair it with some soft pastel kitchen curtains, some beautiful pastel dishcloths and some funky pastel appliances and your kitchen will be the like stepping into a scene of 50’s diner! Oh so retro!

Place a silk dark peach rose arrangement in a plain white dining room, paired with subtle peach tones scattered through out the room. A pair of soft peach scatter pillows, paired with a soft peach rug, and some cream or white candles. These relaxed tones are so easy on the eye and make you want to escape from the world in.

Place a silk mixed peony arrangement or a silk pink rose arrangement in the master bedroom. Pair it with some blush pink scatter cushions and rose gold accessories and some softly draped netting around a 4 posted bed.

Decorate the centre of your dining room table with a silk Lemon rose arrangement.  It is bound to give a once bare dining room table a burst of happy colour! Pair with a beautiful white embroidered tablecloth and some light yellow napkins.

Place a silk Light green phalaenopsis orchid arrangement on a small table at your entrance hall. Giving your guest a warm welcome as soon as you enter your home.

Green Foliage – is still a must-have in 2018. Use hanging plants for shelves and mantelpieces and big, leafy green pieces for bare corners and coffee tables. Place a large artificial Fiddle leaf arrangement in a bare corner in your lounge, place an artificial green Scindapsus arrangement on a shelf in your bedroom or an artificial green Sprengeri arrangement on your front balcony. Place an artificial mixed succulent arrangement on your patio table, or hang an artificial Succulent box above your lounge suite. Hang up a vertical garden on a bare wall in your home, where it can be noticed and the green foliage can soften the room. Our artificial full vertical garden – green mix contains gorgeous soft foliage and is bound to make a statement in any room.

Ultra Violet – has been voted the Pantone colour of the year for 2018. This colour is indeed a bold shade and it can be quite a challenge when decorating a room with this shade, but if done right, it can look really striking and make a huge statement. Place a silk rose + freesia arrangement on your dining room table, paired with a white runner and silver accessories. Place a silk mixed purple arrangement on your coffee table.

Tropical shades – punchy brights mixed with gold are a must. Use palm leaves and delicious monsters to add that much desired tropical feel. Nothing beats 3D, real touch greens as opposed to flat printed items. So fill your rooms with some of our gorgeous lush leafy greens, such as our artificial Philodendron in ceramic arrangement. Place a few artificial Taro leaves; artificial Fan Palm leaves, or some artificial big leaf stems in tall vase and display next to a brightly coloured lounge suite. Add a touch of colour with one of colourful arrangements, such as our – artificial Bird of Paradise + Mokara Orchid Spray arrangement, artificial Calla Lily + Mokara Orchid Spray arrangement, or artificial Fuschia Vanda Orchid arrangement.

Greenery – Pantone of the year 2017

What is a Pantone?

When we speak of a Pantone in the design world we are referring to a colour that is a proprietary colour space used in a variety of industries, primarily printing, though sometimes in the manufacture of coloured paint, fabric, & plastics. Pantone, an X-Rite company & the global authority on colour & provider of professional colour standards for the designs industries announced that the new colour of the year, for 2017 is Pantone 15-0343 Greenery. It is a refreshing & revitalizing shade, symbolic of new beginnings. Greenery is a fresh & zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore & renew. Greenery reminds one of flourishing foliage, signals lushness of the great outdoors & encourages one to take a deep breath, oxygenate & reinvigorate.

“While Serenity and Rose Quartz, the PANTONE Color of the Year 2016, expressed the need for harmony in a chaotic world,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalize and unite, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

“The tangy yellow-green speaks to our desire to express, explore, experiment and reinvent, imparting a sense of buoyancy,” said Eiseman. “Through its reassuring yet assertive vibrancy, Greenery offers us self-assurance and boldness to live life on our own terms, during a time when we are redefining what makes us successful and happy.”

The colour of the year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. Pantone’s colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute search the globe for new colour influences & include new lifestyles & socio-economic conditions.

After reading all of the above, it is quite amazing to learn how many emotions one colour can evoke in one’s subconscious mind. With all that in mind, when it comes to decorating your home or a clients space, there are many ways in which we can incorporate Greenery. You could add botanically-themed wallpaper, botanical printed lounge-suite or feature a plant, tree, hanging arrangement or even a Vertical Garden.
